Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Toast
Dim Sum Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Toast is a creamy and crispy appetizer frequently served at Chinese American restaurants.
Crisp bread and a creamy Shrimp Paste fried to perfection.
You can have the same great taste in your Air Fryer, with very little effort.
My hubs has always loved Shrimp Toast.
Cast of Ingredients for Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Toast
He does so much for me, I thought I better create a recipe for him. He is a bit particular, so I did not use Lemongrass, but it is a great addition.
What goes into Chinese Shrimp Paste?
- Egg
- Shrimp
- Mayonnaise
- Soy Sauce
- Fish Sauce
- Potato Starch
- Pure Sesame Oil
- Lemongrass is a great addition
You might ask yourself, why Mayonnaise?
The bread really needs to infuse with some type of oil, so that it is crisp, but not dry like a cracker.
The infused Bread in my oh so good Hot Onion Cheese Dip Bread Bowl recipe is one of my all time favorite recipes. Hence my idea!
I also thought about how much I love my Crazy Good Bang Bang Shrimp. (BTW, I have turned this into an Air Fryer recipe, which can be found . . . .)
Oh, and I love, love, love Dynamite Sushi, so it all made sense. When Mayonnaise is baked, it does something wonderful.
Blend Ingredients to make Shrimp Paste
You will need to use a Food Processor or a Mini Processor.
If you use a Blender or Vitamix, make sure not to turn the Paste into liquid.
Alternatively, you can mince up the Shrimp into teensy, tiny pieces.
Toast the Bread a Bit
Traditionally, Shrimp Toast is fried in oil, either in a Deep Fat Fryer, on in a Skillet on the stove.
The bread becomes crispy and the Shrimp is fried to perfection.
I actually own that particular Deep Fat Fryer. The price has really come down. I suppose it has to do with Air Fryers being all the rage.
You are wondering, do I miss using it? Yeah, but, Air Frying is so much healthier.
Back to the recipe, you know I often digress. Since Shrimp cooks so quickly, I found it better to slightly toast the bread before spreading on the Shrimp Paste.
So, while you are assembling the Paste, grab your Olive Oil Sprayer / Mister for Cooking and give one side of the bread a hearty spray.
Shrimp Paste!
You may need to scrape down the sides of the bowl of your Food Processor, to make sure you get all the ingredients well incorporated.
For a fragrant and fresh citrusy/lime flavor, do try adding a Tablespoon of fresh Lemongrass to the Shrimp Paste.
Make sure to just use the white part at the bottom, after pulling off the first, hard layer.
Spread the Paste End to End
Depending on the size of your bread (or Baguette (which would be super fantastic too)), spread the Shrimp Paste to completely cover the bread and crust.
Remove the crust if you like; I’m a crust girl, especially when it absorbs the mayo and becomes crunchy.
Much like my Air Fryer Perfect Cinnamon Toast, you want to have goop on every spec of the bread.
Dip Shrimp Paste into Sesame Seeds
So, I always have Sesame Seeds in the house.
We like to snack on Pressure Cooker Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and the Sesame Seeds are used to make the Tahini.
But, when it came time to make Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Paste, I could not find where I put the Sesame Seeds.
Since the Shrimp was defrosted and I was all ready to make this dish, I went a head anyway, so you will have to use your imagination.
In the above photo, I am pretending to dunk the bread, Shrimp Paste down, into the Sesame Seeds.
Humor me.
Cut the Bread into Four Pieces
White Bread is the bread of choice. You want regular sliced bread, not thick.
In particular, my Hokkaido Milk Sandwich Loaf recipe is perfect for this Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Paste recipe. I mean, if you are into baking bread and all that fun.
We were curious about how Shrimp Toast would be using whole grain bread. Well, we will go back to using White Bread.
You can cut the bread into triangles prior prior to spreading on the Shrimp Paste, if that is your preference. For me, I find it easier to spread first and then cut.
Spray the Shrimp Paste with Oil
When you use an Oil Mister and spray generously, you will think you are using tons of oil.
You are not. It just seems that way, so make sure to generously spray the Shrimp paste.
If your bread is rectangle, try making Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Toast Sticks or Strips.
I really should have asked Ed to cut the bread.

I hope you will enjoy this fun and unusual Dim Sum.
Air Fryer Chinese Shrimp Toast, as you can see, is super simple to make and uses plain old pantry items, for the most part.
