Rotisserie Style Whole Chicken Air Fryer Method

Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken

So, I’m sure we have all had that delicious Rotisserie Chicken from Costco, right?

We spend hours going up and down every aisle. By the time we are finished shopping, we are exhausted. We have a big basket full of goodies.

The thought of coming home and putting away all those groceries (and other things that we probably did not need) and is overwhelming. The thought of then having to make dinner, makes things more overwhelming.

So, we run back to the back of the store and grab a Rotisserie Chicken, that we have been smelling since we first walked in to Costco.

With my Ultrean 8.5 Quart Air Fryer, an Air Fryer Oven or the Mealthy Crisplid, and this Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken recipe, you can easily make the same, delicious Rotisserie Style Chicken, any day of the week and have it ready in one hour.

Yep, one little hour, with minimal prep work.

Please feel free to join the chat at This Old Gal Cooking Group, where we share recipes, methods and fun.

Ingredients for Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken

  • Chicken
  • This Old Gal Seasoned Salt (House Seasoning)
  • Ghee

For this demonstration, I used a 5.9 pound chicken and I stuffed it, as I wanted to see the time difference between a stuffed Air Fryer Chicken v. a non stuffed Air Fryer Chicken.

While it is delicious, stuffed, you will need to allow for an extra 20 minutes and will want to cover the chicken with foil for the first 30 minutes, so that the skin won’t get too dark. For a chicken over 5 pounds, I suggest using an Extra Large Air Fryer.

Since my Ultrean 8.5 Quart Air Fryer was not available, I used my small air fryer  for this monster of a chicken. I had to shove it in, but it worked.

Make Stuffing (Optional)

Make Stuffing (Optional)

How to Make Stuffing for Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken

  • For the stuffing, I just mixed up some bread I had dried.
  • Added seasonings, some diced celery and onions and Homemade Pressure Cooker Chicken Stock.

If you are not making stuffing (and we usually don’t), just toss an cut onion into the cavity, if you like, although, it is really not necessary.

As the chicken is cooking, you could always make a batch of my Instant Pot Stuffing to have on the side.

20160606_184101

I like to put my chicken into a mixing bowl, since the chicken is so slippery and can get away from me. Plus, it keeps the counter very neat.

Make sure to remove the giblet package that is inside of the chicken and then pat it dry with a paper towel.

Before I seasoned the chicken, I stuffed it, but I doubt I will do this again, as I prefer the taste of a non-stuffed chicken.

20160606_184118

What Type of Oil to Use?

  • It is important to use a “high heat” oil, so that the chicken and skin does not burn.
  • Ghee is great for using with higher temperatures for longer cook times. My Instant Pot Ghee recipe is very easy to make and I always have a jar available.
  • Coconut oil is very good too, as it won’t burn at this temperature, with the chicken so close to the heating element.

Make sure to rub every inch of the chicken.

Season Chicken Well

Season Chicken Well

I love a very heavily seasoned chicken and I use my own Seasoned Salt recipe.

You can use whatever seasoning you like.

20160606_184231

Season the entire chicken very well.

Place Whole Chicken in Air Fryer, Breast Side Down

Place Whole Chicken in Air Fryer, Breast Side Down

A larger air fryer like the Ultrean 8.5 Quart Air Fryer or the Ultrean 8.5 Quart Air Fryer Toaster Oven is the way to go to make the best Air Fryer Rotisserie Chicken.

The Mealthy Crisplid accessory can also be used after setting up your Instant Pot, Ninja Foodi or Pressure Cooker as an air fryer.

If using a smaller air fryer, just push down on the chicken to break the bone a little, so that it will fit.

20160606_191707

After 30 minutes, flip the chicken over. Look how delicious the underside looks already. Your kitchen will smell wonderful!

Chicken Breast Side Up

Chicken Breast Side Up

Flip over the chicken and cook the chicken for another 30 minutes.

If using the Air Fryer Oven, use the rotisserie basket and the roast setting.

Make sure you test the internal temperature with a Digital Meat Thermometer. The temperature should be 165 degrees.

20160606_215204

The chicken skin crackles and is so wonderful.

Serve the chicken with Creamy Mashed Potatoes or Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes and a green vegetable.

I made this recipe tonight with my new instant pot air fryer lid. My chicken was a bit over 5 pounds so I did 35 minutes on each side. I used avocado oil, seasoned salt and pepper and placed the chicken on the rack that came with my instant pot. It was well browned, crispy skin and oh so juicy!! Thanks for a fantastic recipe!

Just joined your blog love watching you do your magic in your af. My question is when cooking chicken do you have to use oil? I read a recipe that the chicken skin had enough grease in them that there was no need to spritz. What do you think? I also just got a power af oven it has 3 racks. No book or fryer basket. Could you let me know what pans and other things ill need an where to get them. Thank you so much Reva

I got an air fryer over that rotates the chicken. Got it for Christmas so is my first time doing a whole chicken. The bad boy I got is 5.89 lbs. Is this gonna cook all the way through, or do you suggest I go longer than the ‘extra’ 10 minutes?
Chicken in the air dryer is one thing I’m finicky about because chicken has to be cooked through and I’m still fairly new with temperature settings on an air fryer as it cooks differently than the oven.

The title of the recipe is Air Fryer ROTISSERIE Chicken – yet the directions have you put it in a pan – THAT’S NOT ROTISSERIE. Won’t be using this recipe, it’s misleading from the get-go!

Just like any air fryer recipe, the food is not actually deep fried in oil. It is food cooked in an air fryer which tastes like other methods, like rotisserie. It tastes like a rotisserie chicken but cooked in an air fryer, hence the name AIR FRYER rotisserie chicken.

This was really good. My chicken was 3.75 lbs. and cooked it 30 min. Each side and it was perfect. I used Montreal Chicken Seasoning. The only thing is the chicken was $7, so that’s more than you pay for one at Sam’s or Costco already cooked. I’ll watch for a sale.

But it would help those who are more visual since sometimes looking at photos or reading doesn’t help as much sometimes. sometimes i tend to miss when i read and do it at same time. but i am thinking of trying this since i like Costco’s rotisserie chicken. I just love you! I have tried many of your pressure cooker recipes and I just got an air fryer on black Friday. It’s a Bella 2.6qt and after the rebate it was $20. I figure I can try it and if I like AF I can get something a bit bigger lol 3.5qt and give this to my faughter. There is just me and the hubby. BTW I am 50 hrs old and have no nonsense rules now lol and I love your sense of humor and the same approach! My question is I found a beautiful 3lb chicken and it fits in the 2.6qt. As far as timing can you give me a time to check it. I know it won’t take as long but I am unsure that I can use the same temp and time got it soaking in buttermilk and plan to follow up with your seasoning technique ty vm

Hi Salina. Than you so much. The time for your chicken should be similar to this recipe, minus about 30 minutes. Just keep an eye out, as every air fryer cooks differently. The GW I use seem to cook more even and accurate. Jill

Yes, but still check the temperature. Different brands of air fryers seem to cook at different speeds. Jill

Thanks for the recipe!!! I tried it using my large air fryer the chicken turned out beautifully. I used my own seasonings and put a pineapple sauce over it and my husband loved it. I will make this often we liked it better than the holidaybird!!

My girlfriend raves about her air fryer and you’ve done me right with your fantastic Instant Pot and Air Fryer recipes (Chick-Faux-let being my favorite).

I’m trying this simple rotisserie chicken equivalent as my first meal in 2018. 25 mins in and it smells awesome.

Thanks for your very helpful website.

Having purchased the Philips XL Air Fryer, I particularly wanted to do a rotisserie chicken but the recipe book didn’t have what I was looking for, thank goodness I found your website. Made last night with my own stuffing, added butter under skin, drizzled with olive oil, salt and aromat rubbed in, 35 minutes each side and was simply sublime!!! Absolutely the best rotisserie chicken in the world!! While I was on a roll, I also did the french fries, jalapeno peppers and crumbed mushrooms. What a blessing to have only one pot to deal with. Thank you Jill for a wonderful website. Will also be following your pressure cooker recipes for new ideas. I use my pressure cooker for curries, stews and bean dishes.

Just bought my air fryer. Im looking for recipes that contain foods I can have. I have a very unusual diet. Its a Gluten Free Liver Warfarin Friendly Cardiac Diabetic Diet. Not much left on the “Can Have” list. Especially after the foods I’m allergic to are removed.
So I’m really looking forward to some good old down home recipes I can ciok in my new Power 3.4 Air Fryer XL Pro.

I fixed your rotisserie style chicken tonight after work. It tasted great, had a small salad on the side. It was the first thing I have ever cooked in it. My brother gave it to me for Christmas, I was a little skeptical at first, but that beautiful chicken came out crisp and moist. I’m now looking for more dishes to do. Thanks again!!

I’m trying to decide between the 3.7 and 5.8. I live alone but I would like to do whole chickens. What size chicken do you think would be best in the smaller fryer? Thank you for all your recipes here and for the IP.

Both sizes are nice. You can easily do a four pound chicken in the smaller unit.

You say to remove the giblet package and pat it dry. What do you do with it afterwards? I usually give it to the dog raw.

This looks so yummy! I have two questions, and you’re probably the best person to ask! First, I love the way the seasoning on a rotisserie chicken from Costco or Sam’s tastes. Is your seasoning salt blend close to the same flavor? Next, my daughter gave me her unwanted Big Boss Oiless fryer recently, and I’m wondering if this recipe would work well in it. Do I put the chicken on the short rack, or the tall one? I want it crispy, but not burned. Thanks so much for your recipes. I’ve been reading through your blog today. (I also have the IP, and love your pressure cooker recipes.)

P.S. I just purchased an air fryer *this morning* from Amazon Prime for a LOT less than what QVC had it for. I’m replacing the small NuWave I’ve had for years because it won’t hold a whole chicken. I can’t wait to start cooking with it and I’m happy to have found you on Pinterest!

When it comes to rubbing any kind of fat on poultry be it butter, oil, etc., I use mayonnaise! Fat is fat is fat, and mayonnaise adds a ton of flavor because, well, it’s good! I do this with my Thanksgiving bird and my family raves about it every year. One thing I will add, be sure to pat the bird dry or the mayonnaise won’t stick.

I will be trying this one for sure Thank You. And Jay, Yuk on Mayonnaise, shame on you. I love the stuff. A friend and my self love peanut butter and mayo on rye bread. It is also good for making grilled cheese instead of butter. Try it my friend, you will be glad you did. By the way, use Hellmonn’s and real pure peanut butter.
